2010 Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions winner Aravane Rezai has staked her claim to bid for the title again later this year after holding off a strong challenge from Argentina’s Gisela Dulko to win the Collector Swedish Open in Bastad.
The young Frenchwoman, who beat Marion Bartoli in last years final, overcame Dulko 6-3 4-6 6-4 to win her fourth Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title. After finishing as runner-up in her first two finals, at Istanbul in 2007 and in Auckland in 2008, she has now won her last four finals and lifted the trophy in Strasbourg in 2009 and Madrid earlier this year, as well as in Bali last November. It was the first time that Rezai had managed to defeat Dulko in three attempts.
"It was a very difficult match," said Rezai, "but at the end I showed I could win these matches and these tournaments. Gisela kept fighting and showed she can run anything down. She had her tactics, I had my tactics, and it was a great match. I was just trying to show my best tennis. Each one of my titles is different. They all mean a lot to me. This week I proved I could be very consistent and that I'm on the right path."
Rezai is now a strong contender to be able to defend her Bali title. Only the top eight-ranked players to have won a singles title on the International Series and who are not playing at the WTA Championships in Doha will be eligible to compete in the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions, which takes place at the Bali International Convention Centre, The Westin Resort, Nusa Dua from 4th to 7th November.
Hungary’s Agnes Szavay also added her name to the list of contenders as she won the GDF SUEZ Grand Prix in Budapest for the second straight year, beating Patty Schnyder 6-2, 6-4. In fact the match made history because the same two players contested the 2009 final, and that is the first time that has happened at a non-Slam event since Amelie Mauresmo and Kim Clijsters met in the 2006 and 2007 Antwerp finals.
"It's unbelievable to win in Hungary again," Szavay added. "The crowd was great, just like last year. To win two times at home, I can't describe this feeling. It was a tough match, especially because of the weather - it was really hot. We also both had long matches yesterday, so we were both pretty tired. But we tried to do our best.
"I think mentally it was better for me today. We played in the final last year and I won in a tight match, and I think she was thinking about it. She seemed a little nervous at the beginning."
